Mark I Perceptron machine, the first implementation of the perceptron algorithm. It was connected to a camera with 20×20 cadmium sulfidephotocells
to make a 400-pixel image. The main visible feature is a patch panel
that set different combinations of input features. To the right, arrays
of potentiometers that implemented the adaptive weights.[2]: 213

The rules extraction system (RULES) family is a family of
inductive learning that includes several covering algorithms. This
family is used to build a predictive model based on given observation.
It works based on the concept of separate-and-conquer to directly induce rules from a given training set and build its knowledge repository.
Algorithms under RULES family are usually available in data mining tools, such as KEEL and WEKA, known for knowledge extraction and decision making.
Paralanguage, also known as vocalics, is a component of meta-communication that may modify meaning, give nuanced meaning, or convey emotion, by using techniques such as prosody, pitch, volume, intonation, etc. It is sometimes defined as relating to nonphonemic properties only. Paralanguage may be expressed consciously or unconsciously.
His work has served as a basis for all later research, especially
those investigating the relationship between paralanguage and culture
(since paralanguage is learned, it differs by language and culture). A
good example is the work of John J. Gumperz
on language and social identity, which specifically describes
paralinguistic differences between participants in intercultural
interactions.[5] The film Gumperz made for BBC in 1982, Multiracial Britain: Cross talk, does a particularly good job of demonstrating cultural differences in paralanguage and their impact on relationships.
Paralinguistic information, because it is phenomenal, belongs to the external speech signal (Ferdinand de Saussure's parole) but not to the arbitrary conmodality. Even vocal language has some paralinguistic as well as linguistic properties that can be seen (lip reading, McGurk effect), and even felt, e.g. by the Tadoma method.
An operational taxonomic unit (OTU) is an operational
definition used to classify groups of closely related individuals. The
term was originally introduced in 1963 by Robert R. Sokal and Peter H. A. Sneath in the context of numerical taxonomy, where an "operational taxonomic unit" is simply the group of organisms currently being studied.[1]
In this sense, an OTU is a pragmatic definition to group individuals by
similarity, equivalent to but not necessarily in line with classical Linnaean taxonomy or modern evolutionary taxonomy.
Nowadays, however, the term "OTU" is commonly used in a different
context and refers to clusters of (uncultivated or unknown) organisms,
grouped by DNA sequence similarity of a specific taxonomic marker gene
(originally coined as mOTU; molecular OTU).[2] In other words, OTUs are pragmatic proxies for "species" (microbial or metazoan) at different taxonomic levels, in the absence of traditional systems of biological classification
as are available for macroscopic organisms. For several years, OTUs
have been the most commonly used units of diversity, especially when
analysing small subunit 16S (for prokaryotes) or 18S rRNA (for eukaryotes[3]) marker gene sequence datasets.
Sequences can be clustered according to their similarity to one
another, and operational taxonomic units are defined based on the
similarity threshold (usually 97% similarity; however also 100%
similarity is common, also known as single variants[4])
set by the researcher. It remains debatable how well this
commonly-used method recapitulates true microbial species phylogeny or
ecology. Although OTUs can be calculated differently when using
different algorithms or thresholds, recent research by Schmidt et al.
(2014) demonstrated that microbial OTUs were generally ecologically
consistent across habitats and several OTU clustering approaches.[5] The number of OTUs defined may be inflated due to errors in DNA sequencing.[6]
The notion of margin is important in several machine learning classification algorithms, as it can be used to bound the generalization error of the classifier. These bounds are frequently shown using the VC dimension. Of particular prominence is the generalization error bound on boosting algorithms and support vector machines.

Hierarchical classification is a system of grouping things according to a hierarchy.[1]
In the field of machine learning, hierarchical classification is sometimes referred to as instance space decomposition,[2] which splits a complete multi-class problem into a set of smaller classification problems.
In several dominant drug classification systems, these four types of classifications form a hierarchy. For example, the fibrates are a chemical class of drugs (amphipathic carboxylic acids) that share the same mechanism of action (PPAR agonist) and mode of action (reducing blood triglycerides), and that are used to prevent and treat the same disease (atherosclerosis).
Conversely, not all PPAR agonists are fibrates, not all triglyceride
lowering agents are PPAR agonists, and not all drugs used to treat
atherosclerosis are triglyceride-lowering agents.
A drug class is typically defined by a prototype drug, the most important, and typically the first developed drug within the class, used as a reference for comparison.
