Instructions for Unauthorized Third Parties

You have indicated you are not the taxpayer, and you are not an authorized third party designee (TPD). Under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) 6103, you are not authorized to receive an EIN on the taxpayer’s behalf.

However, you may continue with the online application and upon successful completion, an EIN will be assigned. The taxpayer should allow up to 4 weeks to receive notification. You will not be able to view the EIN.

Click the “Continue” button if you wish to continue with the application. If you do not wish to continue with the online application, click the “Exit Application” button.

Certification for Third Party Designee (TPD)

If a third party designee (TPD) is completing the online application on behalf of the taxpayer, the taxpayer must authorize the third party to apply for and receive the EIN on his/her behalf, according to the process below:

1. The taxpayer must sign a completed Form SS-4 (Application for Employer Identification Number), including the TPD section, prior to the third party completing the online application, and a copy of the signed Form SS-4 must be retained in the third party's files.

2. The taxpayer must read and sign a statement that he/she understands that he/she is authorizing the third party to apply for and receive the EIN on his/her behalf, and answer questions about completion of the form. A copy of the signed statement must be retained in the third party's files.

3. The assigned EIN will be disclosed to the third party upon successful completion of the online application.

4. The taxpayer will receive a computer-generated notice from the IRS stating that the EIN was assigned.

Please read the following statement and check the appropriate choice.

Under penalties of perjury, I declare that I am an authorized TPD. The taxpayer has completed and signed a Form SS-4, including the TPD Section and has read and signed a statement authorizing me to apply for and receive an EIN on his/her behalf. I have retained copies of both documents in my files.

When Can You Use Your EIN?

This EIN is your permanent number and can be used immediately for most of your business needs, including:

  • Opening a bank account
  • Applying for business licenses
  • Filing a tax return by mail.

However, it will take up to two weeks before your EIN becomes part of the IRS's permanent records. You must wait until this occurs before you can:

  • File an electronic return
  • Make an electronic payment
  • Pass an IRS Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) matching program.
