Molluscum contagiosum

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is one of the most common cutaneous infections arising in childhood and produces a papule in the skin in which viral particles can be identified easily.

From: Principles and Practice of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (Fourth Edition), 2012

  • Differential Diagnosis.

The translucent papule of molluscum contagiosum can resemble nodular basal cell carcinoma or a comedo. Nodular basal cell carcinomas usually have telangiectasia and occur in sun-exposed skin of older patients. Comedones lack umbilication. An inflamed molluscum contagiosum may appear to be a bacterial infection of the skin.
